From a press release:

Arlo’s Tavern in Union Dale is known for its commitment to good music and continues to bring top entertainment to NEPA by launching a series of blues jams featuring a number of the region’s top-tier blues artists.

The blues jams will be hosted by the Soul Shakers, a rhythm section comprised of drummer Sharon O’Connell and bassist Bill Coleman, who have performed separately in a number of bands and together in Mojomo and currently with the Joe Kopicki Band.

Beginning Oct. 5, the first of the series features Phyllis Hopkins at 4 pm. Hopkins, one of the region’s premier blues guitarists, is releasing her third CD with the Phyllis Hopkins Electric Trio. She has shared the stage with such blues greats as Sonny Rhodes, Shemekia Copeland, Debbie Davies, Toni Washington, and Ronnie Earl.

On Oct. 17, the Soul Shakers will feature Chicago Blues Harp master Bob McCartney and guitarist Sam Gabriel. McCartney and Gabriel have performed with Sidetracked, Phyllis Hopkins, Funk N’ Gumbo, The Fat Cats, and other regionally based blues bands.

On Nov. 2, the featured performer is Teddy Young, known in music circles for his fiery guitar playing. Young has shared the stage with many notable players, including Bobby Parker, Little Sammy Davis, and Slam Allen, and he has also opened for such well-known acts as Room Full of Blues, Smokin’ Joe Kubek, and Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers.

To finish up on Dec. 7, the Soul Shakers will feature guitar wizard Matt Bennick, who has performed with a number of regional bands, including Clarence Spady. Bennick’s last band, Matt Bennick and the Blues Mine, gained notoriety for their no-holds-barred approach to blues-based music, which attracted many fans in the area.

Arlo’s Tavern (10340 Pennsylvania 171, Union Dale) never charges a cover. Musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments and sit in at the smoke-free venue. A drum kit, bass amp, and PA will be provided. More information can be found at arloscountrystore.com and on Facebook.
