Mount Everest climber Brent Bishop to speak at Keystone College

The Keystone College Concerts and Lectures Series will welcome mountain climber and motivational speaker Brent Bishop for a lecture, “Lessons from Everest: Picking Up Trash at the Top of the World,” on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Theatre in Brooks at the Hibbard Campus Center. The event is free and open to the public.
One of America’s most accomplished mountain climbers, Bishop first reached the summit of Mount Everest in 1994. Surprised by the amount of trash left on the slopes by other climbing expeditions, he co-founded the Sagarmatha (the Nepalese name for Mt. Everest) Environmental Expedition, an organization committed to cleaning trash off the slopes of Everest. Since 1994, the organization has removed more than 25,000 pounds of trash from the mountain.
Mr. Bishop’s presentation will draw upon breathtaking mountain images while focusing on the importance of vision, goal setting, leadership, and teamwork to reach one’s goals.
The son of the late legendary climber Barry Bishop, Brent Bishop was the first American legacy to follow in his father’s footsteps and summit Mt. Everest. In addition to his 1994 climb, he joined the National Geographic Mt. Everest expedition to mark the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of the mountain in 2002. National Geographic produced the documentary “Surviving Everest” based on this climb.
Bishop’s climbing and work as a guide has taken him throughout the United States, Canada, South America, Europe, Asia, and the Antarctic. A noted climber, he is the recipient of the Lowell Thomas Award from the Explorers Club, an international professional exploration society. He is also the recipient of the American Alpine Club’s David Brower Conservation Award in recognition of his environmental efforts.
He received an undergraduate degree from Duke University and a master’s degree from the University of Washington. In addition to his climbing and environmental achievements, Bishop is also an experienced business consultant working with Fortune 500 companies and Internet start-ups.
