Two of modern metal’s biggest acts, Slipknot and Marilyn Manson, co-headlined a night of musical mayhem at the Giant Center in Hershey on Sunday, July 10 with metalcore band Of Mice & Men.

Speaking about touring with Mason last month, Slipknot vocalist Corey Taylor told Rolling Stone, “There’s a positive competition there that we both respond to. When we play with him, we watch him tear it down every night, and that just makes us want to tear it down every night, too. So there’s a mutual respect that goes along with that positive competition that will make for great shows no matter where we are. To me, that’s the best respect that you can show a fellow artist, especially someone you really enjoy what they do.”

Many rock music websites like Loudwire picked up the story of Manson’s “bizarre performance” that night after fans uploaded videos of it to YouTube. Slurring his words, he ranted about “a drug trafficker” in his mind before demanding that a roadie bring him a jacket, poured a beer onto the microphone stand, tripped over himself after messing with the soundboard, and yelled about moving a cord off the stage that was in his way, saying, “I don’t want to fall on my dick with that cord. So can you fix it, please? And don’t give me that uppity look because you’re not black,” before throwing his microphone. Manson, who canceled a subsequent show due to an unspecified “illness,” is known for creating controversy, but this probably isn’t the type of publicity he was hoping to stir up.

Thankfully, Slipknot picked up the pace with a career-spanning 17-song set. With a giant video screen flashing behind them, the masked metalheads delivered a crowd-pleasing concert with heavy headbanging, spinning hydraulic drums, and high-energy performances from all nine members.

“We have been coming up here for a very fucking long time, and every time we have come to your state, whether it’s Hershey or fuckin’ Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, any of the cities here in this fuckin’ state, you have made us feel like we are from Pennsylvania, so thank you so fuckin’ much,” Taylor told the enthusiastic audience in the middle of the show.
