Learn what a firkin is firsthand at Beer Boys’ Firkin Fall Fest
The Firkin Fall Fest is almost here! Except there’s one problem – what the firk is a firkin?!
A firkin is a unit of measurement (about 10.80 gallons or 40.91 liters), but it’s also a small wooden or metal keg used for cask conditioning. The fun part comes when the firkin is tapped. The spout is driven into the barrel horizontally, usually spraying everywhere. The beer can then flow out naturally carbonated and fermented. This short video explains more:
Now that you’re prepared for what’s in store, here are the details. The Firkin Fall Fest will be held at Beer Boys (176 N. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre) on Sunday, Sept. 21 from noon-9 p.m. There will be four firkins, over 40 fall seasonal beers, on-site sampling, free glassware, food specials, hourly prizes, and more.
12 p.m.: Susquehanna Brewing Co.
Pumpkin infused with banana
2 p.m.: Weyerbacher Brewing Company
Imperial pumpkin cask conditioned with chocolate
4 p.m.: Nimble Hill
Midnight Fuggle cask conditioned with pumpkin and vanilla bean
6 p.m.: Southern Tier Brewing Company
