The Breaking Ground Poets held their first poetry slam of the season at TwentyFiveEight Studios in Scranton on Saturday, Oct. 25, and it was standing room only for good reason.

Maggie Gilbertson, Hayden Nichols, Mason Crawford, Aidan Cronin, Mitchell Winters, Claire Sheen, Cassi Miller, Jessica Yagloski, Kevin Parker, Mayling Ijomah, Adriana Adams, Abby Yurksza, Skyler Roote, and Bailey Bloyd all performed that night, with first place going to Gilbertson, a 10th grader from Dallas High school; second to Sheen, a senior from MMI Preparatory School; and third to Roote, a senior from Tunkhannock Area High School.

Guided by Tunkhannock Area English teacher Katie Wisnosky, the BGP, ages 14-19, wowed the audience by digging deep and bravely sharing some of their innermost thoughts on stage. Learn more about the BGP in this article and e-mail kwisnosky@frontiernet.net to join the BGP monthly newsletter about upcoming events and workshops. New teens are welcome to join the group.

NEPA Scene was invited to be a guest judge on Saturday night, so while we were there, we took some photos of the young poets in action.
