Cash prize offered to voted winner every week

After circulating a poll through social media to test the waters and see if the demand was there, NEPA Scene and The Woodlands Inn are teaming up for a weekly Open Mic Night in Wilkes-Barre every Tuesday night.

The 21+ event is open to artists of all types – musicians, poets, actors, comedians, magicians, storytellers, or whatever will fit on the stage at The Woodlands (1073 Hwy. 315, Wilkes-Barre). The first open mic will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 18.

“We’re always looking for new ways to engage our readers and support local artists directly, so this open mic night is the perfect way to do that each week,” NEPA Scene founder and editor Rich Howells said.

“Reporting about the arts is one thing, but fostering them and giving them an outlet to grow is just as important to us. The Woodlands has been a staple in local entertainment for many years, so we’re thrilled to partner with them on this. Unlike many open mics, we’re also offering a cash prize to the best act of the night, which is an added bonus for overworked and underpaid artists in the area.”

Registration starts at 8 p.m.; there will be about eight slots available. Showtime is at 9 p.m., and each performer will have about 15 minutes to show their stuff. Future events will begin registration at 6:30 p.m., with the performers starting at 7:30 p.m.

Howells will be hosting, and he will help determine the winner along with The Woodlands and votes gathered from the audience, so artists are encouraged to bring friends, family, and fans with them for support. Anyone who wishes to vote must fill out a vote card upon arrival, including their name, birthday, e-mail address, and mobile number.

The winning performer will receive a $25 cash prize immediately upon winning, and if they agree to open the next NEPA Scene Open Mic the following Tuesday, they’ll also receive a $25 performance fee and $25 Crescenzo’s gift card the next week (certain conditions apply).

Additionally, the winner will be featured on nepascene.com, and other online features related to the weekly event are being planned for the future.

RSVP to the event on NEPA Scene’s Facebook page under “Upcoming Events” and discuss it on social media with the hashtag #OpenMicWB. It can also be viewed in the NEPA Scene calendar.
