When the credits rolled on the last “Star Wars” film, we all knew it wouldn’t be long before the franchise rose again. Now, after many images have been teased and leaked, an official teaser trailer for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has been released online and in theaters.

Directed, written, and produced by J. J. Abrams, who recently rebooted the “Star Trek” film franchise, “The Force Awakens” is set about 30 years after “Return of the Jedi” and reunites the original cast of Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Peter Mayhew, Anthony Daniels, and Kenny Baker. Plot details have been scarce, but the teaser trailer does give some hints about what the title alludes to, and some of the series’ iconic ships are seen back in flight.

This is the first “Star Wars” film since “Episode III: Revenge of the Sith” was released in 2005 and the seventh film in the series. Scheduled to be released on Dec. 18, 2015, it is also the first “Star Wars” film produced since The Walt Disney Company acquired Lucasfilm in 2012.
