From a press release:

The SMG-managed Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre Township announced security enhancements today that are being implemented immediately to increase the level of safety provided to its patrons and employees.

These new enhancements include walk-through metal detectors at every arena entrance for all events and a clear bag policy permitting fans to bring their personal belongings in a clear tote not to exceed 12″x12″x6″. The metal detectors will be in place beginning with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins game this Wednesday, Dec. 19 at 7:05 p.m. against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, and the clear bag policy will take effect beginning Jan. 1, 2019, although guests attending events from Dec. 19 through Dec. 31 are encouraged to adhere to the new policy.

The implementation of walk-through metal detectors as an enhanced security procedure is becoming commonplace in the concert and event industry. Besides Mohegan Sun Arena, Beaver Stadium in State College presently implements these measures, including a clear bag policy, and concertgoers nationwide at most nonprofessional sports venues can expect to see additional security measures in the near future.

“The safety of our guests as well as our employees is of the utmost importance to us,” said Brian Sipe, SMG general manager of Mohegan Sun Arena. “We strongly believe that most venues will be implementing these policies in the near future, if they haven’t already, and we want to be at the forefront of this change in security policy in public venues like ours.”

The clear bag policy will help alleviate time spent by security officials searching various compartments of purses and concealed bags. However, fans are always encouraged to arrive early to upcoming events to allow enough time for parking and the ingress process.

Bags that are clear and measure 12″x12″x6″ or less or one-gallon plastic freezer bags (Ziploc or similar) will be permitted inside the venue with personal belongings such as medical items, coats, cameras, binoculars, child care items and, for select events like Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins games, iPads and other mobile tablets.

A wristlet with or without a strap no larger than 4″x6″x1″ will also be allowed inside the venue without being placed into a clear bag and is subject to search upon arrival. General care items such as glasses, wallets, and keys should stay in a guest’s pocket when passing through the metal detectors.

Guests will no longer be permitted to bring in backpacks, fanny packs, purses, diaper bags, camera bags, or briefcases. Babies may be brought in using a soft baby carries or a sling. See a full list of prohibited items below.
