Last year, the original lineup of Sponge reunited for one night only during the annual Detroit Music Awards in their hometown, and now the current members of the alternative rock band are keeping the nostalgia going across the country with their “Rotting Piñata” 25th Anniversary Tour, which stopped at Stage West in Scranton on Sunday, March 17.
With hit singles “Plowed” and “Molly (16 Candles Down the Drain)” in heavy rotation on the radio and MTV, the group became a household name in 1994 with their platinum-selling debut album, and the 1996 follow-up, “Wax Ecstatic,” produced additional hits like the title track and “Have You Seen Mary?” All these songs and more made the sentimental setlist, sounding just as great as they did in those days.
Balancing the night with something new was opening act Another Day Dawns, an up-and-coming hard rock band from Lehighton that has been earning fervent support from fans, terrestrial radio, and media outlets in both the Lehigh Valley and Northeastern Pennsylvania leading up to and following the release of their new EP, “A Different Life,” last month. Every energetic performance they deliver confirms that they have the potential to be as big a success, if not bigger, than the national acts they often open for.
