With weather just cold enough for skiing yet warm enough to enjoy an outdoor concert, Montage Mountain in Scranton hosted its seventh annual Mountainfest on Saturday, March 5.

As Hershey-based brewery Tröegs Independent Brewing served up the beer, skiers and other winter sports enthusiasts hit the slopes or tried pond skimming in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

The Verve Pipe, best known for songs like “The Freshmen,” “Photograph,” “Villains,” and “Colorful,” took the stage in the afternoon, and as if that wasn’t enough ’90s nostalgia, the Spin Doctors headlined soon after, playing chart-topping hits like “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong” and “Two Princes” from 1991’s “Pocket Full of Kryptonite,” a staple of any CD collection from that era, as well as “Cleopatra’s Cat” and other familiar tunes.

With six studio albums and over 30 years of experience as a band, the New York musicians expanded upon those songs with the kind of jamming that only longtime friends could produce, encouraging the bundled-up audience to generate their own heat by dancing and singing along.

Skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing added a unique backdrop to the music, which continued into the evening at Montage’s Midland as fireworks lit up the chilly night.
