EXCLUSIVE: Rocky Rhodes and John ‘Stu’ Sanderson honored with Lifetime Achievement Steamtown Music Awards in Scranton

Today, the Electric City Music Conference announced that two Lifetime Achievement Awards will be presented at the 12th annual Steamtown Music Awards. The awards will honor the remarkable careers of beloved radio personality Rocky Rhodes and the late, highly respected sound engineer John “Stu” Sanderson.

Rocky Rhodes is being recognized for his profound impact on the region’s airwaves over a career spanning more than four decades. As a cornerstone of morning radio, Rhodes recently signed off from 98.5 KRZ, where he spent 35 of his 45 years in the industry. Known for his wit and warmth, Rhodes became a familiar voice for millions of listeners across Northeastern Pennsylvania. His legacy is one of adaptability, having seamlessly transitioned from turntables to digital radio, all while fostering a deep connection with the community he came to call home. He recently announced his retirement to spend more time traveling, kayaking, and pursuing his passion for making hot sauce.

John “Stu” Sanderson, who passed away on July 6, 2025, will be honored posthumously for his invaluable contributions to the local music scene. For more than 40 years, Sanderson was the “sound guy” behind countless live performances, known for his unwavering commitment to making every note sound its best. Beyond his technical skill, he was cherished by musicians and friends for his quiet strength, gentle nature, and deep compassion. Sanderson’s work was more than just a job – it was an art form that touched the lives of countless artists and audience members throughout the region.

“This year, we have the unique opportunity to celebrate two individuals who have shaped the soundtrack of our community in completely different but equally meaningful ways,” said SMA organizer Joe Caviston.

“Rocky Rhodes brought joy and companionship to our morning commutes, while Stu Sanderson was the unsung hero behind the scenes, ensuring the music we loved sounded perfect. Their legacies are a testament to the talent and dedication that make the Northeast Pennsylvania music scene so special.”

Alongside 34 other categories, the Lifetime Achievement Awards will given out during the 2025 Steamtown Music Awards ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 11 at The V-Spot (906 Providence Rd., Scranton), starting at 6 p.m.
