Comedian and actress Wanda Sykes comes to Kirby Center in Wilkes-Barre on Nov. 1

It was announced today that comedian, actress, and writer Wanda Sykes, named one of Entertainment Weekly’s “25 Funniest People in America,” will bring her Oh Well Tour to the F.M. Kirby Center in Wilkes-Barre on Thursday, Nov. 1 at 8 p.m.
Tickets, which are $25, $35, $95, and $195 (VIP), plus fees, go on sale this Friday, July 13 at 10 a.m. and can be purchased at the Kirby Center box office (71 Public Square, Wilkes-Barre), online at kirbycenter.org, and by phone at 570-826-1100. A special Kirby Member pre-sale begins on Tuesday, July 10 at 10 a.m.
Wanda Sykes has been called “one of the funniest stand-up comics” by her peers and ranks among Entertainment Weekly’s 25 Funniest People in America. Her smart stand-up has sent her career in many different areas.
Her witty work over the years includes comedy that touched on politics, her personal life, and observational humor. Sykes has starred in numerous television comedy specials on Comedy Central and HBO. Most recently, her comedy special “What Happened… Ms. Sykes?” premiered in the fall of 2016 on Epix.
In 2012, Sykes joined forces with veteran producer Page Hurwitz to form Push It Productions, a production company dedicated to creating quality, comedy-based programming for network and cable television outlets. The company’s diverse slate of projects includes sketch comedy, concerts, reality talk/variety, and competition formats. Their first set of specials, “Herlarious,” aired in the summer of 2013 and January 2014 on Own and was the recipient of a 2014 Gracie Award.
Some of her TV work includes performing on or writing for “Blackish,” “Alpha House,” “House of Lies,” “Broad City,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “New Adventures of Old Christine,” and “The Chris Rock Show.” This has led to several Primetime Emmy Award nominations and a win in 1999 for Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music, or Comedy Special for “The Chris Rock Show.”
In 2001, she won the American Comedy Award for Outstanding Female Stand-Up Comic, and in 2010, she won a GLAAD award for promoting a good image of equal rights for gays and lesbians.
Sykes has appeared in several films, like 2017’s “Snatched” with Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn; “Evan Almighty,” in which she co-starred with Steve Carell; and “Monster-in-Law,” starring opposite Jane Fonda, to name a few. She can also be heard in animated movies like “Over the Hedge” and “Barnyard” and as “Granny” in the most recent “Ice Age” films.
Her first book, titled “Yeah, I Said It,” published by Simon and Schuster, hit bookstores in September of 2004. This hilarious collection of essays touches on life, family, and current events.
