Pocono Mountains Theater Company grapples with cloning and identity in ‘A Number’ Sept. 30-Nov. 2

The Pocono Mountains Theater Company will return to the Poconos with a production of “A Number,” a play addressing the subjects of human cloning and identity by award-winning British playwright Caryl Churchill.
Performance venues include The Cooperage Project (1030 Main St., Honesdale) on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 4 p.m. and Friday, Nov. 2 at 8 p.m.; Sarah Street Grill (550 Quaker Alley, Stroudsburg) on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m.; Pocono Cinema & Cultural Center (88 S Courtland St., East Stroudsburg) on Wednesday, Oct. 17 and Thursday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.; and the historic Shawnee Playhouse (552 River Rd., Shawnee on Delaware) on Saturday, Oct. 27 and Sunday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m.

“A Number” explores the fragility of personal identity and nature versus nurture. A son confronts his emotionally distant father, learning a horrifying truth about his past. This is a profound work whose characters grapple with guilt, vanity, menace, and quiet resentment.

The play originally debuted at the Royal Court Theatre in London in 2002; it was directed by Stephen Daldry and featured actors Michael Gambon and Daniel Craig. “A Number” made its American debut at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2004 in a production starring Sam Shepard (later Arliss Howard) and Dallas Roberts.
Gillian Turner, who recently appeared in the Pocono Mountains Theater Company’s production of “The Amish Project,” will direct. Neal Johnson and David Schappert have been cast as father and son, both making their first appearance with the PMTC.
“We are excited to team up again with Gillian Turner, now as a director, and this fantastic duo of actors as we continue in our efforts to bring great theater to Northeast PA,” artistic director Brian Long said.
